Long Island weather: Rain tonight into Wednesday, colder temps on the way
Chilly temperatures, even lower than what's normal for this time of year, are on the way, forecasters said, after some midweek rain.
Tuesday's high of 49 degrees, and Wednesday's 55 will be the warmest days this week, and starting Thursday temperatures will run around the low to mid-40s for at least five more days.
At night, look for thermometers to drift down to freezing and slightly below as the week continues.
Tuesday night will be windy and wet, and temperatures will fall to the low 40s, then rise somewhat as the rain continues through the night with gusts of up to 28 mph. The system should produce anywhere up to three-quarters of an inch of rain, the National Weather Service said.
And though the coast can expect just rain, the "first wintry weather event of the season” will arrive Tuesday night for the lower Hudson Valley and inland areas in the New York metropolitan region, the National Weather Service said.
Wednesday morning on Long Island will see more rain before 10 a.m. and the winds will still be gusting to about 24 mph throughout a cloudy afternoon. By night, the mercury will fall to about 36 degrees.
Then, Thursday, the big chill sets in, although sunshine will be abundant each day through Monday. “Temperatures will be running several degrees below normal,” the weather service said.
And thanks to what it calls “a series of weak fronts,” those colder than usual temperatures will stick around. Thursday's high will be 48, Friday's will be 46 and the weekend and the start of next week will see highs of just 43 degrees, the weather service said.
