Long Island weather: 1 to 2 inches of snow, more for the East End

A "light, accumulating snowfall" is expected across the region Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, the National Weather Service said Tuesday.

The snow, expected to last until Thursday morning, could affect both the Wednesday  evening and Thursday morning commutes. The highest possible amounts are forecast to be between one and two inches for Long Island, with a higher amount for the East End, the service said Tuesday evening.

Travel could become difficult Wednesday evening, and there is a chance sleet will mix in with the snow, the service said.

Temperatures will stay below normal for this time of year through midweek. Highs Wednesday will only be in the middle and upper 20s, the service said and wind chill values are predicted to be between 20 and 25 degrees.

After the snow wraps up, Thursday will be cloudy, with a high in the upper 30s.

But the winds, which were gusting to about 35 mph Tuesday, were easing overnight -- a relief after Monday's intense gusts, which knocked out trees and power across Long Island.

There is a chance for more snow showers Friday, the first day of March, with a high in the upper 30s.  Saturday follows with a predicted rain/snow mix before it clears out for a sunny Sunday.
