Three days of summerlike warmth are in store for Long Island this week, after a chilly Tuesday that hinted at Autumn's arrival.
The delightful weather, with strikingly mild temperatures, is the result of high pressure systems traveling through the Southeast and up to the East Coast starting Wednesday, forecasters said.
"High pressure sliding east over the Southeast region allows for the return of southerly flow in the Mid-South today and eventually reaching the East Coast late Wednesday into Thursday," the weather service’s Weather Prediction Center said Tuesday. "The result is abnormally warm temperatures making a comeback after a few days' worth of seasonally cooler conditions."
Though westerly breezes on Tuesday will be strong enough that the weather service issued a small craft advisory "for all waters" through Tuesday night, those winds should ease on Wednesday, though "seas may linger near five feet on the ocean," the weather service said.
The winds will die down Wednesday, said the weather service, which forecast highs in the 70s Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as well, the weather service said.
"Temps at least 10 degrees above normal on Friday should still end up a few degrees above normal into the weekend, and then finally drop closer to normal Sunday night into Monday," the weather service said.
An offshore storm may develop Saturday, which means there is the "potential for a steadier rain mainly across Long Island Friday night into Saturday," the weather service said.
Friday’s odds of showers are 30%. Saturday’s odds are 40% before they ease down to 30% that night.
Sunday, however, should be bright and clear during the day, as Canada delivers a high pressure system.
Sunday night’s chances of rain are 40% and Monday’s are 30%, when the daytime high will be a cool 58 degrees.
