Rain overnight across Long Island will continue through late Wednesday morning, with a soupy mix of fog and drizzle after that and a chance of showers at night, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature will dip to about 47 before sunrise Wednesday and only go up by a few degrees throughout the day, the weather service said.

Nearly an inch of rain is expected before the low-pressure system clears the Island, according to weather service data. Wednesday's high will top out at about 50, dipping to 46 at night.

Thursday will see more rain and a high near 54 and a nighttime low of 45. There's a 30% chance of showers before 9 a.m. Friday, with a mix of sun and clouds after that and a high of 59. Friday night, the temperature will drop to 42 under mostly cloudy skies.

Saturday brings another 30% chance of showers all day and into the night. The high will be 56 and the low, 40.

Sun is in the forecast for Sunday with a high of 54 and a low at night of 39.

The average high for the metro area this time of year is 58 degrees, though a record for this date is 80 degrees, set in New York in 1928, according to the New York City Almanac.

The record low was 20 degrees, set in New York City in 1874.

The daily record high for Islip, whose records date to 1963, is 75 degrees in 2010. The low is 26 degrees, in 1972.
