Long Island weather: Overnight rain, then a damp Wednesday
Light rain was falling on Long Island Tuesday evening but showers were likely to intensify overnight, the National Weather Service says, with on and off rain possible through Thursday.
Daytime temperatures will likely remain in the 70s this week until Friday’s sun helps raise them into the low 80s just in time for the weekend, the weather service forecast. Nighttime temperatures over the next seven days will ease back to the 60s.
Wednesday’s downpour odds are 40% with a cool high of 67, and more rain developing overnight and into Thursday morning, forecasters said.
Thursday gets drier but remains cloudy with patchy fog at night and a high of 72, the weather service said. Then, skies clear Friday, thanks to a high pressure system settling in, with sunny skies and a high of 78.
Saturday and Sunday should be mostly sunny with highs close to 80. There is a slight chance showers may dampen Saturday afternoon, but any rain might stay further south, the weather service said.
By Sunday night, more showers may arrive, as a new set of weather systems settle in. The odds are 40% Sunday and 50% on Monday.
“Southerly flow increases by late Sunday, the warmest day of the period, as a cold front works east and shower chances begin to increase into early Monday,” the weather service said.
