After an unusually warm Tuesday, the National Weather Service is warning that the rest of the work week looks cooler and wetter

Wednesday looks to be cloudy and cool with highs in the mid-40s. But Wednesday night, the weather service says, more wintery conditions move into the region, with heavy rain for Long Island and a snow/sleet mix for other areas, forecasters said.

A National Weather Service briefing issued Tuesday afternoon said the wintry mix of snow, sleet and ice will develop across parts of the area, including New Jersey and Southern Connecticut, but for coastal areas such as Long Island, just rain is expected Wednesday through Friday.

That's after a warm Tuesday where highs reached into the high 50s amid light rain that will turn into steadier showers Tuesday night into Wednesday as temperatures begin to fall.

The weather service said to expect up to 2 and a half inches of rain Wednesday night through Friday for the entire region, which could lead to minor flooding.

The sun comes out, finally, Saturday with a high in the 30s, the weather service says.
