Long Island weather: Tuesday’s icy temps give way to warmer Wednesday

By Wednesday, the cold air mass that has its icy grip on Long Island will be gone.

But for most of Tuesday, Nassau and Suffolk counties will get temperatures near 30 degrees that — combined with the wind chill — will make it feel like the midteens, forecasters said.

The day shapes up to be mostly sunny, but breezy north winds up to 15 mph mean windchill temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees, News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said.

Some gusts could be as high as 25 mph, he said.

Overnight, the arctic air mass actually produced some flurries at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, Republic Airport in Farmingdale and some areas of the East End, said John Cristantello, a meteorologist at the service’s Upton office.

But it’s likely to be dry for the rest of the week, with the weekend likely to get some rain, according Hoffman.

Tuesday night looks to be clear and cold with winds shifting slightly, to the north northwest, and subsiding to about 10 mph.

Overnight lows will be in the midteens, giving way to a much more normal Wednesday.

“Cold air is gone Wednesday,” Hoffman said, with temperatures in the low 40s. Winds shift again to the west southwest, he said, and nighttime lows on Wednesday drop to the 20s.
