After a light wintry mix in the early morning, Long Island should see scattered showers throughout Tuesday, forecasters said.

“We’ve had some ice pellets out here this morning,” said News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman. “But, for the most part now, it is just rain.”

There could be more winter weather on the way, though, with a possible coastal storm Sunday.

Temperatures should top out in the mid-40s Tuesday, about 10 degrees above normal. The showers should keep up into the night as winds pick up, with a low temperature around 40 degrees.

Wednesday, slightly cooler and dry, brings strong, gusty winds of 30 to 40 mph, Hoffman said. The National Weather Service issued gale warnings and small craft advisories for waters off Long Island on Wednesday.

After highs in the low 40s Wednesday, a cold front is expected to move through the area Wednesday into Thursday, the weather service said. Temperatures should dip to the upper 20s into Thursday.

Thursday should be dry again and even cooler, with highs in the upper 30s. That's near or slightly below normal, the weather service said.

Friday and Saturday are expected to be cold, with highs in the low 30s and lows near 20.

On Sunday, Long Island could get snow, possibly heavy, Hoffman said. However, that depends on where an incoming coastal storm tracks up the coast and whether the air is cold enough.

Highs are expected to be in the mid-30s Sunday. Hoffman put the odds of significant snow accumulation at “decent.”

“It's early, but we need to watch closely,” Hoffman said.
