Light rain and gusty winds of more than 25 mph were moving through Long Island Tuesday night, the National Weather Service said.

The showers were expected to linger and intensify overnight and into early Wednesday, the weather service said. But winds should calm overnight and the temperature should fall about 10 degrees to the mid 60s.

The winds were driving ocean waves on the South Shore and the weather service, which issued warnings for "life-threatening" rip currents Tuesday, issued the same cautions for Wednesday.

Wednesday morning looks damp, and after a partly sunny day with a high of 78 degrees, rain could return in the predawn hours of Thursday with the possibility of a thunderstorm as well, forecasters said.

Thursday’s rainfall odds, especially before 2 p.m., are at 80% and winds will also ramp up again with gusts up to 31 mph, and a high of 77., forecasters said. Clouds should clear Thursday night, the weather service said.

Friday should be bright and sunny, with highs again in the mid-70s, but the weekend also could be wet.

Showers are likely Saturday morning with the risk of rain increasing as the day goes on and lasting through Saturday night. Highs in the low 70s are expected.

Sunday should be sunny and clear with a high in the mid 70s, forecasters said.
