Tuesday will be dry, with clouds "increasing, lowering and thickening," the National Weather Service said. Then by evening, either rain or a mix of rain and snow will fall, quickly turning into just snow. News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman has the forecast. Credit: News 12 Long Island

Snow fell on Long Island Tuesday afternoon for the second time in two days and forecasters predicted that up to three inches could remain on the ground by Wednesday morning in easternmost parts of the Island, while the rest could get just a dusting.

The afternoon precipitation was a mix of rain, snow and sleet but Jim Connolly of the National Weather Service in Upton said the snow would prevail and fall periodically through Tuesday night.

“Generally, we’re looking at 1 to 3 inches with lesser amounts west and higher amounts east,” he said, adding that temperatures will dip to about 30 degrees.

Wednesday will bring strong winds reaching up to 50 mph with a chance of rain and more snow later in the evening.

Temperatures will be seasonal, about 40 degrees, but a cold front will drop temperatures by early Wednesday night and make way for a “a brief dusting of snow and a chance of a snow squall,” Connolly said.

Visibility is expected to drop to about a half mile when the heaviest snow falls.

“Tie down loose objects,” Connolly said, adding that drivers of taller vehicles should use greater caution.

Thursday is expected to be sunny but cold, with temperatures dipping to the mid-30s. Friday looks to be warmer, with a high near 49 degrees, but mostly cloudy, the weather service said.

Rain is possible Saturday and Sunday, with highs expected in the 50s, the weather service said.
