Long Island forecast: Seasonable temps, sunny skies till midweek
Typical August temperatures with light winds are forecast for the start of the workweek before Wednesday brings possible showers, according to the National Weather Service.
The forecast for Monday shows partly sunny skies with a high near 82 and light, variable wind between 5 and 8 mph in the morning. Nighttime becomes mostly cloudy with a low in the mid-60s and northeast winds between 5 and 7 mph, the weather service said.
A partly sunny Tuesday will be slightly chiller than Monday with a high around 78 and east wind ranging from 10 to 13 mph. Thursday night’s forecast includes clouds, northeast wind around 9 mph and a low near 63.
The average temperature for this time of year near Islip is around 82, said John Cristantello, a meteorologist with the weather service, who noted that temperatures have fallen significantly since the recent heat waves.
"Temperatures by the time you get toward the end of August are probably in the upper 70s to around 80 for a high temperature,” Cristantello said.
A 30% chance of showers after 2 p.m. is forecast for a partly sunny Wednesday with a high in the upper 70s. Temperatures drop at night to around 64 with a 30% chance of showers before 8 p.m.
The forecast dries up on Thursday with mostly sunny skies and a high in the low 80s. Thursday night will be partly cloudy with a low near 66, the weather service said.
Temperatures warm up for a mostly sunny Friday with a high near 85, but dips at night to a low around 69.
Saturday’s forecast begins partly sunny with a high near 85, but a 40% chance of showers with a low around 70 ends the mostly cloudy night.
Showers continue into Sunday with a 30 % chance of showers and a high in the mid-80s.
