Chances for precipitation, including a possible thunderstorm, pick up Monday night, with the likelihood lessening during the day Tuesday, forecasters said, in a week expected to bring high humidity and the possibility of flash flooding.

Late Monday afternoon weather-related arrival and departure delays were being reported at LaGuardia and Kennedy airports, according to the Federal Aviation Administration website. Travelers should check with their airlines, the FAA said.

Tuesday could actually end up being “more dry than wet,” on Long Island, and “a break of sunshine can’t be ruled out,” said Brian Ciemnecki, National Weather Service meteorologist.

The day is forecast to warm up to the low 80s or so, but will feel particularly muggy, given the tropical air mass that’s in place, the weather service said.

A high rip current risk for ocean beaches is in effect Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The week’s pattern of hit-and-miss showers, humidity, pockets of heavy rain — even “some breaks of sunshine” — is “almost like Florida weather," said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist.

Chances of precipitation returns for Wednesday and Wednesday night, when heavy rain is possible.

In fact, “an approaching frontal system late Tuesday night into Thursday morning could produce showers and thunderstorms capable of causing flash flooding,” the weather service said in a hazardous weather outlook.

For the Island, that means widespread showers Wednesday, with “pretty wet” conditions, Ciemnecki said.

Thursday was looking showery, with mostly sunny skies for Friday, the weather service said. Then, back to chances of showers Saturday, though at this point humidity will be lessening, Ciemnecki said.
