Long Island weather: High rip currents and surf into early next week

Saturday was mostly dry across Long Island, but coastal hazards are likely to increase into early next week, meteorologists said.

The weather service on Saturday night issued a high rip current risk through Sunday evening for the ocean beaches of Long Island.

There will also be a high surf advisory from 11 a.m. Sunday to 6 p.m. Monday, with minor coastal flooding possible at high tide, the weather service said.

Peter Wichrowski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton, said Saturday night will be mainly dry and temperatures will drop into the upper 50s — far below last week's temperatures that felt like 100 degrees or more.

“We could see a little bit of light rain,” Wichrowski said.  “Pretty much a similar scenario to this morning.”

Rain chances increase Sunday, especially later on in the day, according to Wichrowski. Temperatures will be in the upper 60s, forecasters said. It will probably be wet Sunday night into Monday,

The humidity will begin to increase Monday and temperatures will warm up into the mid-70s, Wichrowski said.

There is a pretty good chance of rain Monday — heavy at times — as the warmth moves through the Island, Wichrowski said.
