Long Island weather: Warmer-than-normal Columbus Day

Columbus Day on Long Island looks to be a Monday filled with sunshine and daily high temperatures in the low 70s.

The National Weather Service's Upton office said the slightly warmer-than-normal conditions include a light south wind at 5 to 10 mph.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Matt Hammer said the normal high for this time in October is about 65 degrees.

"Definitely mild for this time of the year," he said. "Great Columbus Day weather for all of those outdoor fall activities."

Hammer said clouds increase Monday night, and there is a slight chance for showers into Tuesday morning.

Hammer said the likelihood of rain is mostly on the East End. "Not much of a chance, just a few isolated showers," he said.

Tuesday calls for partly cloudy skies and a small chance of rain, Hammer said.

But with high temperatures again reaching into the 70s, he said Tuesday "by no means will be a washout."
