Long Island weather: Stretch of nice, dry days ends Thursday evening with showers, chance of a storm

A welcome stretch of clear, dry days gives way Thursday to chances of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, and becoming likely in early evening, forecasters say. Beyond, that, though, we get a return to sunny skies, as temps rise well into the 80s.
Morning sunshine yields to Thursday afternoon clouds, as highs in the low 80s are expected, according to Rich Von Ohlen, News 12 meteorologist.
A shower or storm looks to be on the way later Thursday into Friday, he said, “a little bump in the road.”
Showers and storms become likely early in the evening, with a 70 percent chance of precipitation at night, the National Weather Service said in its Wednesday afternoon update.
Some of those storms could produce heavy rain, and that’s thanks to so much moisture in the air, as well as a lack of steering winds to move the system along quickly, said Carlie Buccola, weather service meteorologist.
Friday also brings chances of showers.
Apart from that, it’s “pretty much quiet weather,” Von Ohlen said, with the weekend looking “very, very good.”
As for Wednesday, an air quality alert remained in place through 11 p.m., meaning elevated levels of ozone. With such elevated pollution levels, health officials advise limiting strenuous outdoor activities.
