Wednesday brings high near 70 degrees to Long Island

Wednesday's Long Island forecast is for mostly sunny skies with once again slightly warmer-than-normal temperatures, the National Weather Service said.

Daily highs across Nassau and Suffolk counties are expected to reach nearly 70 degrees, with west winds from 7 to 13 mph, the service's Upton office said.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said clouds would start to build during the afternoon hours.

A cold front that passes Long Island on Friday is likely to bring in cooler temperatures for the weekend, Hoffman said.

Wednesday night turns partly cloudy with overnight lows possibly dipping below 50, Hoffman said.

Thursday's forecast is for highs in the mid 60s with once again mostly sunny skies.

Then the cold front moves in, Hoffman said.

Some showers are possible Friday, with a cool breeze daily highs in the low 60s.

Skies clear Saturday and Sunday, but temperatures become more fall-like; daily highs are in the low 60s and overnight low are near 40, Hoffman said.

"Our first shot of cold weather is coming this weekend," Hoffman said. "Parts of Long Island will see its first frost."

Especially chilly will be areas around the pine barrens, including Ridge and Manorville and east to Westhampton Beach, he said.
