Long Island weather: Showers, thunderstorms on tap Thursday
Showers and thunderstorms will likely dominate Thursday’s weather despite the warmth, with the rain starting before noon and escalating into a full-blown storm in the early afternoon but tapering off by early evening, National Weather Service forecasters said.
“Showers come back to Long Island tomorrow,” said John Murray, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton. “The chances start after 8 a.m. on Thursday, becoming likely after 9 a.m. and they will continue through much of the afternoon.”
There’s a 90% chance of rain and a projected accumulation of between a quarter and a half inch for the day. The high temperature may reach 61 degrees, but the afternoon winds will be treacherous, ranging from 20 to 25 mph with some gusts clocking in at up to 38 mph.
Forecasters have issued a coastal flooding advisory for western Nassau’s north and south shores.
The wee hours could bring more rain — and slight chance of snow showers after 2 a.m. Friday — with temperatures in the 30s, meteorologists said.
Friday will be drier and cloudy, with a high temperature near 56 degrees amid strong westerly winds ranging from 23 to 28 mph with gusts as high as 43 mph. The evening brings cloudy skies and a low temperature of 37 degrees.
Weekend climes look just about ideal, with clear skies and temperatures in the mid-50s predicted, although there’s an 80% chance of rain on Sunday after 9 p.m.
That wet weather may snarl morning commutes, Murray said, adding that the rain could be heavy at times.
