Long Island weather: Stormy Saturday only possible 'blip' in July Fourth weekend

Mother Nature will be delivering mostly fine weather for the Fourth of July holiday stretch, though there is a showery, stormy blip expected for Saturday, forecasters say.
Thursday, Independence Day, is set to be “a classic July day,” said News 12 meteorologist Pat Cavlin. That means sunshine, temperatures reaching the mid and high 80s in some areas — and conditions on the muggy side.
It’s good for swimming, boating, grilling — basically “good outdoor for anything weather,” he said Wednesday morning.
Still, dew-point temperatures, reflecting the degree of humidity, are rising to the uncomfortable level in the upper 60s, even higher for Friday and Saturday, said David Stark, National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton.
As for Thursday night fireworks time, sky cover was expected to be at 30 to 35 percent, with no low clouds in the picture, he said. Temperatures are likely to be in the 70s.
The warm, fairly sunny, muggy stretch continues with Friday, also with temps in the low to mid-80s. Some areas are expected to see some patchy fog in the morning, the weather service said.
Late afternoon and evening bring chances of showers, leading into what Cavlin calls that “bump in the road” for Saturday.
Chances of precipitation continue for morning, with the afternoon bringing the highest likelihood for showers and thunderstorms, the weather service said. That’s based on the Wednesday afternoon forecast, and timing could shift somewhat.
Still, some of those storms could produce heavy rain. And, as a reminder — all thunderstorms produce lightning. “If you hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck,” the weather service says.
However, the day is not expected to be a total washout, Stark said.
He points to Sunday as being the better of the two weekend days — with its partly sunny skies, highs in the low to mid-80s and relief from the higher humidity levels.
