Long Island weather: Storms develop overnight after warm, muggy Wednesday

Wednesday's warmth and mugginess is predicted to end in overnight downpours and potentially severe storms, the National Weather Service says.

After an unusually warm day in the mid to high 80s, thunderstorms should move in sometime after 10 p.m. Wednesday, the weather service said.

The winds will kick up too, possibly gusting to 25 mph during the storms. And the on and off showers are likely to last into Thursday morning, forecasters said.

From Thursday through Tuesday, there will be a slight cool-down as thermometers during the day should rise no higher than the upper 70s to 80 degrees, and retreat to the mid-60s at night.

And then the sun should return for a pleasant weekend, thanks to a cloud-clearing high pressure system expected to control the weather into early next week, the weather service said.
