Sunshine struggled to get through the Wednesday morning drizzle and fog but made it through by afternoon. Come evening, however, more mist and showers could return, especially on the East End, the National Weather Service said.

What the weather service calls "patchy drizzle" is likely by nightfall but overnight, conditions are expected to clear. Then, a string of sunny days with slightly cooler temperatures is expected until Sunday night, which may be damp — just like Monday’s Halloween, the Upton-based National Weather Service said.

The daytime high of 68 on Wednesday will be almost matched on Thursday — before thermometers slip to the upper 50s on Friday and Saturday — and then rise back into the mid-60s from Sunday through Tuesday.

Naturally, the nighttime temperatures follow a similar arc, with a low Wednesday night of 55. Thermometers then drop into the mid-40s or even cooler for the rest of the next week or so, especially away from the coast, the weather service said.

“There may be some patchy fog for eastern areas early tonight, and it may once again be patchy dense, but as the cold front moves through these areas, it will aid in drying out the lower levels with high pressure building in, generally by midnight or thereafter,” the weather service said.

The cloud-erasing high pressure system brings the sunshine back Thursday — and it continues through Sunday, at least until that night, when the chances of more rain are 30%.

“Clouds increase on Sunday and flow becomes more easterly as high pressure departs to the Western Atlantic,” the weather service said.

A low pressure system, which raises warm air in front of it that can form raindrops, sweeps in from the Atlantic, and the weather service cautioned potentially heavy rain is possible, with as much as 1-1/2 inches falling. The downpour odds on Monday are at 60%, 70% that night, and 50% on Tuesday.

“Rain showers become likely on Monday afternoon and remain likely through early Tuesday morning,” the service said.
