LI weather: Chance of rain, snow this week
A warm but windy New Year's Day brought a sunny start to 2019 for Long Island before temperatures dip down with a chance of rain and light snow later in the week, meteorologists said.
Tuesday's forecast included a high of 55 degrees by 9 a.m. and a wind advisory until 3 p.m. as temperatures fell during the day. A small craft advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday along the north and south shores, according to the National Weather Service's website.
Overnight Tuesday will be mostly clear and colder with diminishing winds, according to News 12 Long Island meteorologist Bill Korbel. Lows overnight are expected to be between 25 and 30 degrees.
Wednesday's forecast looks "very nice" with sunny skies and light winds, Korbel said, with temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s.
Clouds are expected to move in at night Wednesday with some light rain showers — possibly mixed with some snowflakes after midnight — and lows near 30 degrees, he said.
Thursday and Friday's highs are likely to be between 40 and 45 degrees, with a "fair and cool" forecast, Korbel said. Rain is expected to return on Saturday.
