Nearly ideal autumn weather is forecast for Thursday’s Thanksgiving holiday, with sun and highs in the low 50s predicted, the National Weather Service said.

Friday and Sunday, meanwhile, will likely bring rain, forecasters said.

Temperatures over the next week will be milder, bouncing around the 50s during the days. At night, look for thermometers to brush freezing.

After a Wednesday night where temperatures should fall to just above freezing, a sky-clearing high pressure system delivering sunshine will slide over the region Thursday.

“The result will be a dry and seasonably mild day (upper 40s interior/lower 50s city/coast) on Thursday, with increasing jet cirrus streaming in through the day into Thursday night,” the weather service said, referring to feathery-looking clouds.

Thursday overnight, the temperatures will rise to about 45 degrees before it gets wet Friday morning.

And then, a sprawling, rain-causing low pressure system from Texas “tracks east through the Northern Plains and Great Lakes, eventually digging through the Northeast United States late Friday/Friday night,” the weather service explained.

Right now, “a quick hit of moderate rain looks more likely Friday/Friday evening,” the weather service said. It will be mild, about 55 degrees during the day, and the rain is predicted to fall after 10 a.m. and stop about 7 p.m., with winds gusting to about 23 mph, the weather service said, and even 29 mph at night.

On Saturday, another high pressure system will bring the sunshine back to the tristate area.

But not for long, the weather service said, “Clouds increase during the day Saturday, lowering, expanding and thickening Saturday night,” as the high pressure system heads out to the western Atlantic.

The low pressure system delivering Sunday's rain will be coupled with milder temperatures, thanks to southwest breezes and rain is likely during the day and possible at night.

Monday and Tuesday's high will be hover around 50 and it will be sunny, forecasters said.
