There was not much in the way of showers on Long Island late afternoon Wednesday, but forecasters are expecting an uptick in precipitation overnight into Thursday.

Widespread showers were forecast to get started on the Island later in the evening, with any shower having the potential to bring locally heavy rain, given the amount of moisture in the air, said Faye Morrone, National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton. And a rumble of thunder can’t be ruled out, she said.

A high risk of rip currents continues at ocean beaches through 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Look for patchy fog in some areas early Thursday, as chances of showers taper off through the day. Skies were looking to clear Thursday night, and Friday morning could even see a stretch of mostly sunny skies, before slight chances of showers pick up again for the afternoon, the weather service said.

Highs Thursday are expected to be in the mid-80s for areas close to New York City, with temperatures in the upper 70s on the East End.

Friday was looking at highs in the mid-80s, cooler on the East End.
