The Long Island forecast calls for a dangerously hot and humid end to the workweek, with a maximum heat index making it feel close to 100 degrees in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.

The high temperature Thursday will be about 89 and Friday it will be about 86, but both days will feel like it's between 95 and 100 degrees, the weather service said, due to the combination of heat and humidity.

The weather service issued a heat advisory from 11 a.m. Thursday through 8 p.m. Friday, urging senior citizens and those with medical conditions to stay inside with air conditioning or find cooling centers.

Gov. Kathy Hochul urged New Yorkers to keep cool and keep their power use down as much as possible. "More dangerous heat is on the way for many New Yorkers and I'm urging everyone to prepare for high humidity and temperatures later this week," Hochul said in a Wednesday afternoon release.

In the same release, New York State Department of Public Service Commissioner Rory M. Christian said in a statement: "It's important for the public to continue to look for ways to lower their electricity usage and staying cool and hydrated."

The weather service said showers and thunderstorms are possible Friday night and through Saturday, which is expected to be cooler, with a high of 84. Sunday should be sunny, with highs in the mid-80s.
