Long Island weather: Rain moves in Thursday, turns to a wintry mix overnight

Moisture falling on Long Island Thursday and parts of Friday will straddle the line between a chilly rain and a dusting of snow, the National Weather Service said, before a clear and warmer weekend.
After a cloudy Wednesday in the 40s, there is a slight chance of showers and fog Thursday morning and then moderate to heavy rain moves in after noon, depositing between half and three quarters of an inch of moisture.
Overnight, conditions turn blustery, temperatures fall and there is the chance for up to half an inch of snow to be on the ground by Friday morning. In higher terrain north of Long Island, up to three inches of snow is expected, the weather service said Wednesday evening.
On Long island, a wintry mix continues Friday afternoon before the sun comes out briefly and temperatures fall again to the 20s Friday night.
But the weekend, with spring officially beginning on Saturday, should be sunny and balmier.
Saturday’s high is expected to be in the high 40s. Thermometers will rise into the 50s Sunday and Monday.
Until then, look for two systems — one from the Midwest and one from the South — to produce Thursday’s rain. The precipitation odds are 100%, the weather service said.
