The National Weather Service has issued a dense fog advisory for parts of Long Island Wednesday night into early Thursday morning.
In an advisory issued just after 9 p.m., the service warned drivers to watch out for dense fog in northwestern and northeastern Suffolk, southwestern and southeastern Suffolk, and northern and southern Nassau.
The advisory is in effect until 4 a.m. Thursday.
Visibility could be just a quarter-mile or less at times, the service said, especially along the coast.
Faye Barthold, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton, said the best chance for precipitation is from around 8 p.m. Wednesday to midnight.
Locations most likely to see overnight thunderstorms are to the north and west of New York City, she said, though a rumble of thunder can’t be ruled out for Long Island.
Thursday will bring a day that so far appears to be rainfree, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures rising to around 79 degrees, which would be a couple of degrees above normal, she said.
Friday will see mostly sunny skies, at least until around noontime, after which comes a 30 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms, the weather service said.
The weekend looks like a mixed bag, with the forecast calling for a mostly sunny Saturday and a 50 percent chance of showers Sunday.
