Long Island weather: Storms moving through Nassau, western Suffolk

A line of strong thunderstorms was forecast to affect western Suffolk and Nassau County until 11 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

With a much different setup than was seen Tuesday, forecasters were anticipating the main threat Wednesday to be from gusty winds associated with any strong storms, said Jay Engle, National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton. .

Any pockets of heavy rain would be shorter in duration than Tuesday’s downpours, but any second soaking of the same locations could trigger some flooding, more of the nuisance variety, Engle said.

“The ground is saturated,” News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said. “There’s still some issues with the drainage around Long Island.”

Both Kennedy and LaGuardia airports in Queens were reporting weather-related arrival delays, with some departures also affected, the Federal Aviation Administration said. And, a high rip current risk was forecast through the evening for ocean beaches, the weather service said.

Among the unofficial rainfall amounts from Tuesday's storms are: 4.27 inches, Port Jefferson Station; 4 inches in the Hauppauge area; 3.53, Commack; 3.22, Kings Park area; 1.95, Plainview; 1.92, North Wantagh area; 1.75, Syosset.

In Port Jefferson, flooding forced businesses to be evacuated Tuesday night, authorities said. Drivers had to abandon their cars and firefighters had to call for reinforcements when their firehouse became waterlogged.

Thursday was expected to bring partly sunny skies, with temperatures rising to the low 70s. There is a chance of rain Thursday night into Friday. 

Saturday and Sunday will be dry with sunny skies and highs around 70 degrees.
