The coldest air since spring moved into Long Island Wednesday, with a chilly 55 degree high and an even brisker night ahead.

Winds are also gusting to about 20 mph, the National Weather Service said, making it feel even colder. The high temperature Wednesday was around five to eight degrees colder than usual with a low in the high 30s to low 40s expected Wednesday night. Frost advisories were issued to some places north of Long Island but not to the Island itself.

But as of Thursday a slow warm up begins, with daytime thermometers rising from Thursday’s 59 to the upper 60s by Tuesday.

“Thursday will feature one more day of gusty southwest flow with mainly clear skies and highs a touch warmer, but still several degrees below normal,” the forecasters said.

Friday's mercury should rise to about 62, with Saturday and Sunday at a high of 66 degrees, the weather service said, along with abundant sunshine.

The next chance for rain looks to be Sunday night into Monday, forecasters said.

"High pressure will remain over the region Friday through Saturday night before lifting northward. Weather for the remainder of the extended period will be unsettled as low pressure impacts the region Sunday into the first part of next week," the weather service said.
