After a slightly cooler Wednesday, Thursday brings the return of a heat advisory for much of Long Island.

The advisory is in effect for Nassau County and western Suffolk from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., as temperature and humidity combined are expected to make it feel like 100 degrees or so, the National Weather Service said.

Look for Thursday to start off with some areas of patchy fog, with temperatures expected to head up to the high 80s and low 90s — but make that the low 80s for the East End, the weather service said.

Put that together with the humidity and the heat-advisory areas can expect the most uncomfortable conditions from 1 to 5 p.m. range.

The afternoon through evening also brings chances of showers and thunderstorms, with potential for any storms to bring heavy rain and high winds, the weather service said in its reginal summary late Wednesday afternoon.

By Friday, “the heat will break as humidity levels drop,” the weather service said. “A northeast wind and cloud cover will result in noticeably cooler temperatures, with mainly middle 70s to upper 70s across the region,” according to the regional summary.

Indeed, Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist, is calling for “cooler weather for the weekend.”

Welcome news, indeed, as the first four days of September at Long Island MacArthur Airport averaged out to 5.6 degrees above normal for that stretch of the month.
