Long Island weather: Rain clears overnight, high wind advisory till 9 p.m.
Downpours and high winds were moving through Long Island Wednesday, with gusts of up to 50 mph blowing on eastern Long Island, the National Weather Service said.
A wind advisory will be in effect through 9 p.m. Wednesday. The high winds herald the arrival of a cold front coming in Thursday.
"Rain is expected to continue through the evening, with a brief increase in intensity possible as the front moves through. Any precipitation then quickly ends from west to east following the frontal passage as high pressure and a much drier air mass move into the region," the weather service said in its forecast.
Power outages were affecting a high of more than 2,500 customers Wednesday afternoon, according to PSEG Long Island.
Showers should clear out Wednesday evening but the winds will continue to blow, with gusts up to 36 mph in some places.
There is also a gale warning Wednesday afternoon and night for all waters, and there could be an isolated thunderstorm.
Then, the rain will clear out Thursday and it will be sunny. But it could still be breezy, with gusts up to 28 mph possible.
Highs are expected to be in the mid-40s but the wind chill could make it feel like 20 to 30 degrees, the weather service said.
Friday marks a return to milder weather, with sun and highs around 50 degrees expected.
But the rain could return Saturday, when highs are forecast to be near 60 degrees.
Sunday will be sunny, but temperatures will drop down into the upper 40s, the weather service said.
Then more rain is possible Monday and Tuesday, when highs should be in the mid-50s.
