Overnight showers will fall on Long Island, forecasters said, and Thursday will be a day with sunshine but dropping temperatures.

The showers are expected to last just a few hours and stop by Thursday morning, the National Weather Service said. Then, sunny and cool conditions continue Thursday when highs will again be in the 40s but only until midday.

Then the mercury goes down steadily, and Thursday night it turns sharply colder, with a northwest breeze of about 15 mph supplying the wind chill, the weather service said.

Lows of about 17 degrees Thursday night will feel more like 10 to 15, the weather service said.

Friday it will stay cold with a high in the mid-30s and wind chills as low as 20. But the sun will be out until clouds thicken at night and temperatures fall into the mid 20s, forecasters said.

Saturday will be mostly cloudy, with highs in the low 40s. There is a 30% chance of showers overnight, the weather service said.

The likelihood of rain increases Sunday morning, and there is a chance of rain every day through at least Tuesday, forecasters said.

Along with the rain, however, will come the return of warmer temperatures: Sunday's highs are predicted to be in the mid-50s, followed by highs near 60 degrees Monday.
