The last weekend in October is set to be a mixed bag, weather wise, with mostly sunny skies for Saturday and the potential for a strong coastal storm, bringing high winds and heavy rain for Sunday, the fifth anniversary of superstorm Sandy.

“A 50-50 weekend,” is how Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist, puts it.

Saturday is expected to have above-normal temperatures heading up to the mid to upper 60s, the National Weather Service says, meaning a possible good day for leaf-peeping.

Spotters in Nassau County describe “some areas near or at peak and other areas just starting to change,” according to the most recent fall foliage report on ILoveNY.com. Suffolk spotters say to expect just around 20 percent change.

Give it a day, though, and there’s potential Sunday into Sunday night for an intensifying coastal storm to impact the area, with a hazardous weather outlook in effect for Long Island. Possible strong winds and heavy rain could lead to ponding of low-lying areas and small stream flooding, starting Sunday afternoon.

As of late afternoon Friday, uncertainty remained as to the storm’s track, which would determine where the strongest winds and heaviest bands of rain will set up, said David Stark, weather service meteorologist in Upton.

At that time, Long Island was looking at a possible 2 to 4 inches of rain, more in some areas, but it was too soon to tell what spots would be getting the higher amounts, he said.

The weather service was calling for a 90 percent chance of precipitation for Sunday and overnight into Monday.

Southeast winds were expected to increase Sunday through Sunday evening to 20 mph to 30 mph, gusting to 30 mph to 45 mph, particularly along the South Shore and East End, according to a Friday afternoon briefing from the weather service.

Look for “wet and windy weather on Sunday,” Hoffman said.

Indeed, after a fairly quiet stretch, the fifth anniversary of Sandy is bringing “potential for a significant weather event,” Stark said.
