Long Island weather: Windchill may make LI temps feel as low as 15

Sunshine and daily highs in the mid to upper 30s are on tap for Long Island on Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

The blustery north wind that’s put a chill on Long Island the past few days diminishes slightly and shifts, the service’s Upton office said.

Northwest winds blow from 7 to 14 mph, providing windchill values that will make it feel between 15 and 25 degrees, a more bearable winter setting than the start of the week.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman also called for gradual clearing, with mostly sunny skies developing under cold, breezy conditions.

Hoffman said skies stay clear through the nighttime hours and winds subside again, to 5 to 10 mph. Overnight lows are in the low 20s.

Friday morning calls for increasing clouds with temperatures again climbing into the mid 30s.

Both Nassau and Suffolk counties will brace for a winter storm over the weekend, the service said. A blizzard watch is in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon, with nor’easter-like conditions expected.

“Main questions regarding the storm will be focused on how far north the heaviest precipitation will be able to track and where snow banding will set up,” the service said.
