Long Islanders should expect thunderstorms and heavy rain on Monday, but skies are expected to clear with high temperatures of around 80 degrees for most of the workweek, according to the National Weather Service.

A chance of showers and thunderstorms are possible in the morning and in the afternoon with temperatures in the high 70s on Monday. The storms could produce heavy rains, the weather service said, with new rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. At night, a 40% chance of showers, mainly before 9 p.m. is forecast with cloudy skies and some wind.

The weather dries up on Tuesday as temperatures nearly hit 80. Tuesday night will be mostly clear with a low around 61 and winds calming in the evening.

Wednesday will be sunny with a high near 81 and a low around 63 at night.

The forecast for Thursday will also be sunny with a high in the mid-80s. Thursday night will be clear with a low around 66, the weather service said.

Friday rounds out a mostly sunny week with more sun and a high near 85. The night will be partly cloudy with a low around 70.

Rain returns for the weekend with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms forecast for Saturday with partly sunny skies and a high near 86. Showers and thunderstorms are likely at night with a low around 67. 

A 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms with a high in the low 80s, is also forecast for Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
