Long Island weather: Next few days to have spring feel

Long Island will be tying a bow on March with a weekend expected to feature a couple of days in the mid-50s or so, one of them showery, forecasters say.

Saturday’s expected to be the best bet for outdoor activities.  Partly sunny skies and temperatures heading up to the mid 50s are in the picture for much of the Island, the National Weather Service said.

Forecasters were anticipating a few degrees warmer, up to the low 60s or so for Saturday.

But expectations for a southerly flow off the ocean — which is cooler now than land — enhanced further by a sea breeze coming from the same direction, have taken the forecast down to the 50s for many areas, said Joe Pollina, National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton. Some areas could well be sticking with the original low 60s, he said, those farther from the sea breeze’s reach, such as northern Nassau and even into Suffolk.

Sunday, too, is looking at highs in the mid 50s, with the likelihood for widespread  showers from around mid-morning to mid-afternoon, he said.  More scattered precipitation could be around before and after that period.

Monday, the first day of April, is expected to be “cooler and dryer,” he said, with temperatures rising to the mid 40s or so.
