LI forecast: Cold early Monday, possible flooding at night
A frost advisory for western Suffolk County was issued by the National Weather Service for midnight through 8 a.m. Monday, while the eastern part of the county will be on a “freeze watch," as temperatures could fall to the high 20s.
Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and sensitive vegetation and potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Clouds will increase over the skies over Long Island on Monday when the high temperature will be about 52 degrees, while a northeast wind of 7 to 15 mph will come out of the southeast in the afternoon, the weather service said Sunday evening.
Monday night, rain is forecast before 8 p.m. with a low in the 40s and a northeast wind around 17 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 39 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100% and new precipitation amounts are forecast between 1 and 1.5 inches, according to the weather service. Minor to localized moderate coastal flooding is becoming increasingly likely for the Monday night high tide cycle, due to a combination of coming off a full moon and a deepening coastal low being preceded by strong easterly winds.
Rain will trickle into a cloudy Tuesday morning before 8 a.m., but the day will gradually become mostly sunny, with a high temperature in the mid-50s. The chance of precipitation is 60%.
"We should see temperatures gradually rise each day on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday," said weather service meteorologist Brian Ciemnecki.
Wednesday will be dry and sunny with a high near 57 degrees.
Thursday will be partly sunny with a high near 58.
A mostly sunny Friday will warm up to around 67 degrees.
Temperatures in the low 60s with sunny skies are forecast for Saturday and Sunday.
