Weekend temps in 70s as summer officially starts

The first official weekend of summer is looking to feature seasonable temperatures and mostly to partly sunny skies, the National Weather Service said.

On Saturday, the first day of summer, highs are expected to be in the mid 70s for most of Long Island, with onshore breezes meaning lower 70s for ocean-facing beaches, said Joey Picca, weather service meteorologist in Upton.

Sunday's temperatures are forecast for the upper 70s for most of the Island; again, a little cooler at the beaches by a possible 5 to 10 degrees, he said.

Overall, Picca said, the summer is "getting off to a pretty normal start in terms of temperatures."

Indeed, the weather service said that "dry and seasonable temps are expected through much of the long-term period" but that "humidity levels will be increasing towards mid to late next week."
