The long Memorial Day weekend kicks off Friday. But the National Weather Service says don't expect beach or barbecue weather right away.

"We're in for a crummy day," weather service forecaster Brian Ciemnecki said Friday, adding: "And I think, unfortunately, you're looking at the start of a crummy weekend."

Scattered showers are on tap for Friday and Saturday, Ciemnecki said, with on-and-off showers predicted for much of that period.

And, he said, Long Islanders probably don't want to hear this, but "I don't think we're going to hit 60 degrees on Long Island on Saturday."

In fact, the weather service is calling for a high of 57 degrees on Saturday, overnight lows dipping into the 40s on Friday and Saturday, drizzle and scattered showers through to Sunday -- and clearing skies only making an appearance starting Sunday evening into Monday.

There is a high risk of rip currents at South Shore beaches on Friday, as well, the weather service said, though it is possible that risk will subside come Friday night into the weekend.

The good news is that nice weather is on the horizon.

The bad news is it probably won't be until midweek that temperatures climb back into the 70s, forecasters said.
