Long Islanders can expect cooler than normal temperatures for this year's Memorial Day weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The high temperatures forecasted in the low-to-mid 60s on Saturday, upper 60s Sunday and tapping out around 70 on Monday are "below normal for this time of year," John Murray, a meteorologist with the weather service's Upton office, said Friday evening.

"Typically high temperatures for this time of year ... are in the lower 70s," Murray added.

While some parts of Long Island might reach the low 70s normal, other areas, including the North and South Forks, will be colder, according to the meteorologist.

Morning sunshine will give way to a cloudy afternoon Saturday, according to the weather service forecast Friday evening. Temperatures will reach the mid-60s, and there is a low chance for isolated showers Saturday afternoon.

"It's not expected to be the same kind of rain on Thursday," Murray said. "This will be lighter rain, brief in duration as well."

Clouds could blot the skies Sunday afternoon "but you still should be able to see a good deal on sunshine," Murray said. Monday calls for mostly sunny skies "pretty much the whole day," he added.

Dry conditions will prevail from Saturday evening through Monday. There is around a 30% chance Long Island's next bout of rain will fall on Wednesday, according to the weather service.
