After a two-day respite, Long Islanders should start planning for more rain Thursday into Friday, an inch or more in most areas, the National Weather Service said.

Thanks to a low pressure system moving slowly up the coast, residents could wake up to light rain Thursday morning, with increased chances for heavier rainfall in the evening and overnight, said Joey Picca, weather service meteorologist based in Upton.

Western Nassau County could see an inch and a half, with rainfall amounts decreasing to half to a quarter of an inch on the East End, the weather service said.

Already effects of the low-pressure system were being felt Wednesday, with increased clouds and winds, Picca said.

The weather service issued a coastal hazard message, advising of the "increasing threat of minor coastal flooding Thursday" in northwestern Suffolk.

Forecasters said tides of 1 to 11/4 feet above astronomical tides are expected during the time of high tide between 3 and 5 p.m.

The impact is expected to be "localized flooding of the most vulnerable shore roads and/or basements."
