More than 3 inches of rain falls in Freeport
Rainfall drenched some parts of Long Island Monday, especially Nassau, as a soggy air mass made its way across the region.
In Freeport, 3.31 inches of rain fell as of 12:29 p.m. Monday, and 2.4 inches as of 12:08 p.m. in Lynbrook, as reported to the weather service by a trained spotter and emergency manager.
Forecasters said Long Island can expect showers and areas of fog Monday night, mostly before 10 p.m., with a 70 percent chance of precipitation, the weather service said. There's a chance of showers Tuesday, mostly before 11 a.m., as well as areas of fog, according to the service.
Meteorologist Gary Conte said that the narrow storm bands dropped a half-inch to an inch of precipitation per hour.
The bands moved in from the Atlantic Ocean, from the southeast to the northwest, across Nassau and Queens at a rate of about 30 mph, the weather service said.
Low clouds continued to cause delays at metropolitan area airports late Monday afternoon after bands of fast-moving thunderstorms passed through, leading the National Weather Service to issue a flood advisory for portions of Nassau County. It was lifted at 1 p.m.
Just before 4 p.m. the Federal Aviation Administration was reporting delays of an hour and 15 minutes on arrivals at LaGuardia, delays of more than 1 1/2 hours on arrivals at Newark-Liberty and delays of more than a half-hour at Kennedy.
Departure delays from Long Island MacArthur Airport to Boston were averaging 53 minutes, slightly more than 11/2 hours at Newark, 35 minutes at Kennedy and 1 hour, 15 minutes at LaGuardia.
