Mostly sunny weekend ahead of summer's end

After a storm system dropped about a half-inch of rain overnight across Long Island, an incoming high-pressure system means cooler, clearer weather for the final week of summer, the National Weather Service said Friday.

Joe Picca, a meteorologist with the Upton-based service, said the next several days -- including the weekend -- should be pleasant, with mostly sunny skies and daily highs reaching into the mid 70s.

Summer ends Sept. 21.

The incoming high from Canada will settle in to also provide lower humidity, Picca said.

"The weekend looks nice, and as we move into early next week, with a frontal system passing through, there could be a slight chance for isolated showers and sprinkles Tuesday," he said.

As predicted, rain swept through Nassau and Suffolk counties late Thursday and into Friday morning.

Most reports said rainfall amounts were about a half-inch, Picca said.

"It looks like it will be a little cooler than normal," Picca said of the upcoming week. "We won't see any of the extreme heat we saw last week.

"It will be generally pleasant, with clear days and cool nights and some areas dropping into the high 40s and 50s."
