Nassau County could see isolated strong thunderstorms as well as gusty winds Wednesday evening, preceding a cold front that's approaching the area, the National Weather Service said in a hazardous weather outlook.

For the most part the strong to potentially severe storms are expected to pass to the west and north of New York City, forecasters said, but Nassau is also susceptible, with rain likely starting in the 6 to 10 p.m. range, said John Murray, weather service meteorologist based in Upton.

There's a high chance for "multiple broken lines" of showers and thunderstorms to spread across the Island after midnight, he said.

In all, about 3- to 4-tenths of an inch of rain is forecast for the Island for Wednesday through Thursday, the weather service said.

Rain should be clearing out toward late afternoon or evening, leading to "a very nice Friday," said Brian Ciemnecki, also a meteorologist in Upton.

Temperatures Wednesday reached a high of 84 at Long Island MacArthur Airport, with the lower 80s expected for the Island on Thursday and Friday, he said.
