Long Island weather: Fog, rain and a chance of snow

Dense fog, rain and the possibility for more snow — all are in store for Long Island over the coming days, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather service issued a dense fog advisory from 10 p.m. Tuesday through 10 a.m. Wednesday for Nassau and Suffolk counties. Late night and early morning commuters should "be mindful" of potentially obscured visibility, said Dave Stark, a meteorologist with the weather service's Upton office.
As the fog subsides, Stark said, "there is a pretty high probability of rain developing after daybreak" Wednesday.
Thursday will be cloudy with a 20% chance of rain after dark, increasing to 40% through early Friday with a mix of snow. The chance of rain Friday is forecast to climb to 90% before dropping to 50% at night, according to the weather service.
"There’s a very low risk that maybe a few wet snowflakes may mix in on the North Shore at the beginning," Stark said of Friday’s forecast. "But temperatures are not really cold enough, it’s more than likely going to be plain rain."
The highs Thursday and Friday will hover around 40 degrees before dropping to the low 30s at night but "not nearly as cold as what we’re been seeing," Stark said.
Temperatures will rise slightly on a partly sunny Saturday. On Sunday, there's a 50% of snow, with a high in the mid-30s and otherwise partly cloudy skies. The unsettled weather has the potential to linger into Monday, Stark said.
"There is another system that we’re watching," he told Newsday. "The details are very uncertain right now, but there has been at least some hints that there’s the potential of some snow as a coastal system may develop. ... There is a lot of pieces that have to come together for this. We’re still talking [several] days out. There’s a lot of unknowns on what type of impacts might be possible."
