NWS: Back-to-back storms bringing rain to region

Two back-to-back storm systems are set to deliver mostly rain to Long Island in the coming days, starting with a short period of light snow Tuesday afternoon.

Snow, likely to bypass the Twin Forks and leave just a coating for the rest of the Island, is expected to quickly change to all rain around halfway through the Tuesday evening commute, said Faye Barthold, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton.

Light rain continues overnight and through the day Wednesday, when the second, stronger system takes over, with heavy rain Wednesday evening and into the overnight hours, she said. In addition to heavy rain, windy conditions and minor coastal flooding, a few thunderstorms could enter the picture, the weather service said, bringing the possibility of gusts up to 50 mph.

Rain turns to scattered showers Thursday morning, with around an inch and a half of precipitation, just about all of it rain, forecast from Tuesday at 1 p.m. through Thursday at 1 p.m.

Temperatures Tuesday are forecast for the mid- to upper 30s, with Tuesday and Wednesday seeing highs in the 50s.
