Police: 15 arrested in Far Rockaway looting
Looters who struck in Far Rockaway after superstorm Sandy face several charges, including burglary and possession of stolen property, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Wednesday.
Fifteen people were arrested on a variety of charges related to the storm, Brown's office said in a news release.
At least two suspects, including one who broke into a Radio Shack on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, also face charges of assault and resisting arrest, the release said.
Brown said in a statement that his office, the NYPD and Mayor Michael Bloomberg "have zero tolerance for looters who would exploit a natural disaster like Hurricane Sandy for their own personal gain."
Brown also said such "lawlessness will be vigorously prosecuted."
Most of those were arrested on charges that include at least one count of third-degree robbery, Brown's office said, a Class D felony punishable by up to 7 years in prison.
