Potential for 'significant snow' this weekend

As Long Islanders shiver with temperatures in the 20s Thursday morning, forecasters are warning there is the "potential for significant snowfall" on Long Island from late Saturday into Monday morning.
Lauren Nash, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said late Wednesday it's "very early" in the prediction process, but forecasters are "monitoring the situation."
Low pressure is expected to develop off the mid-Atlantic coast by Sunday morning and is forecast to track toward the Northeast, the weather service said.
"Any precipitation we do get will be snow," Nash said.
There's a 30 percent chance of snow, she said.
How much snow is the question - and that depends on the storm's track and strength.
"A couple of [forecast] models are differing," Nash said.
Nash said it's too soon to make a worst-case scenario prediction.
"Definitely," she said, "keep an eye on the forecast."
Sunday marks the one-year anniversary of the 2009 snowstorm which dumped a record 25 inches on Long Island.
