Con Edison has reduced power to parts of Staten Island as it repairs broken electrical equipment, the company announced on Saturday.

The affected area includes more than 61,000 customers in St. George, Tompkinsville, Park Hill, Stapleton, Grant City, Fox Hills, New Dorp, Dongan Hills, Midland Beach and Rosebank.

Utility officials said they cut the power as a precaution to protect equipment and maintain service for other residents as crews make repairs.

The problems were not directly linked to the high heat; but power usage tends to go up as temperatures rise.

Con Edison has asked customers in the affected areas not to use appliances such as washers, dryers, air conditioners and to turn off lights and televisions when they are not needed until the equipment problems are resolved.

On Long Island, the Long Island Power Authority was reporting only 20 outages on Saturday morning, affecting 189 customers.
