More rain expected on Long Island into the night

There may have been a lull, but the rain's not quite done yet on Long Island.

More rain is expected Thursday evening into the night, said Brian Ciemnecki, National Weather Service meteorologist.

Temperatures are in the mid- to upper-50s, dropping to the low- to mid-40s, he said.

As of 5 p.m., just over a half inch of rain had fallen at Long Island MacArthur Airport.

The rain is expected to give way to a cool, clear weekend, the National Weather Service said.

Low pressure moving northeast across the region through Thursday night is largely responsible for the rain, the service's Upton office said.

Incoming high pressure and a series of "reinforcing cold fronts" will bring in the drier weather starting later Friday, the service said.

On Friday, there's a 20 percent chance of rain during the day, and winds from the northwest increase, the service said.

Breezy conditions will prevail, with a northwest wind of from 11 to 16 mph increasing to 18 to 23 mph in the morning. Winds in some areas could gust as high as 34 mph.

Friday night calls for partly cloudy conditions, with a low slightly above freezing.

Northwest winds dissipate to 8 to 14 mph, with some gusts to 25 mph expected.

Weekend temperatures call for daily highs in the upper 40s and low 50s, the service said, with mostly sunny skies Saturday and some clouds emerging Sunday.
