Rain, heavy at times, in Long Island overnight forecast

Bands of fast-moving heavy rain are expected overnight on Long Island Wednesday night into Thursday morning, forecasters said.

"The bands of rain are going to be moving as they come across the area," Stark said, adding that while there could be heavy rain, it likely won't stay in any place long enough for heavy flooding.

The rain should affect the early morning rush, but will taper off from west to east beginning in the midmorning in Nassau, he said.

Scattered showers moved into western Long Island Wednesday evening and were expected to intensify and become more widespread in the overnight hours, courtesy of a low-pressure system "with a lot of moisture riding along it," according to the National Weather Service.

About 11/2 to 21/2 inches of rain is anticipated on parts of Long Island, with some areas seeing more than that, he said. Thunderstorms are also possible.

Forecasters said minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible. The weather was causing minor delays on arrivals at LaGuardia Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
